Battalion Trip To Woburn Safari Park
On Saturday 22nd September the Anchor Boys and Junior Sections of Enfield Battalion went on a day out to Woburn Safari Park.  We travelled in four minibuses and took 38 boys and 19 staff. 7 boys & 3 staff from the 10th went on the trip.

On arrival at the park we drove through the animal enclosures including rhinoceros, buffalo, tigers, lions, giraffes, wolves, bears and the highlight of the tour, the monkeys.

While the other animals were content to be observed as we drove by, the monkeys wanted to have fun by climbing on to our minibuses and going for a ride, much to the amusement of the boys inside.

Having left the animals we parked and had lunch by the minibuses and then went of to explore the rest of the park.

Starting with the pedal boats we moved on to the feeding of the elephants in the new viewing paddock, the land of lemurs, penguin world, small animals enclosure and then feeding time for the squirrel monkeys.

After a walk through the wallabies and koalas we went on the train &  there was just time for the gift shop before boarding the minibuses.

On the way out we passed the elephant enclosure and then went for another drive through the big animals and this time the tigers were roaming around having been asleep earlier but the monkeys were not so mischievous as before.

We then left the park passing through the Woburn Abbey estate and returned home, a great day out with a rare day of good weather enjoyed by all.

Norfolk Summer Camp 2012 . . . with a windy conclusion!

On Saturday 25th August a group of 12 young people plus leaders travelled from Enfield to Beeston Regis in Norfolk for our Annual Summer Camp. The group was made up of members of 3rd and 10th Enfield BB and 1st Winchmore Hill GB.

Throughout the week the young people got to take part in a number of off site activities including the fantastic Tree Top Trail (high ropes course) and Power Fan at Hill Top Adventure Centre, a day at the Pleasure Wood Hill Theme Park, a putting competition on the Beeston Putting Green, a day out in Great Yarmouth, swimming at Splash in Sheringham, as well as spending time on the beach and in the sea. On site activities included a quiz, devotions, football, bbq and other sports.

Our week at camp should have come to an end on Friday afternoon (31st August) but due to 53mph gusts of wind hitting the campsite on Thursday afternoon the campsite was lost and the programme of activities which was due to include the Camp Talent Show and Go Karting had to be curtailed. With the wind so powerful our dining marquee was ripped to shreds and it was impossible to maintain the tents and so we had to strike the campsite and sent the younger members home a little early. The leaders and some of the Senior boys stayed on site overnight to tidy up and pack things in the lorry for the return home on Friday.

Chris Norman (Leader) said "We could not believe our eyes as our £6000 dining marquee was ripped to shreds by the wind, the gusts were sufficient to be throwing items around the field with plates, bowls, cups and even tables all over the place! Everyone pulled together so well to do what they could to save tents as well as their own kit. It was a different ending to what we had been expecting, but overall it had been a fantastic week and the wind will certainly have made it a memorable year for all!".

Another unexpected event was the arrival of a BBC film crew and reporter from BBC Look East, after being sent a photo they wanted to come and see what had happened and find out more. They arrived onsite and interviewed leaders and boys and filmed us as we packed away the site. This was later shown on the 6.30pm Look East programme on BBC1, you can see the clip at

Even with the unexpected change to the week, there was such a fantastic atmosphere at the camp and everybody got along so well with lots of laughs even when we were battling the winds!
